POLITICS AND GOVERNANCE
The National Movement for Social Justice has urged lawmakers to reconsider the proposed 22nd Amendment, which would extend the terms of Supreme Court and Court of Appeal judges. The NMSJ warns the change could put the Supreme Court in a conflict of interest, forced to hear a case concerning the tenure of its own judges.
The SJB has criticised the demolition of beachfront businesses in Ahangama. National Youth Organizer Chamith Wijesundera said the move makes little sense while the economy remains fragile.
ECONOMY AND MARKETS
The Colombo Stock Exchange fell for a second straight session on Wednesday, with the ASPI closing below 21,450. Both benchmark indices ended lower on broad selling pressure, despite continued foreign buying.
Sri Lanka Customs will launch its Digital Signature and Paperless Customs Declaration System on October 1. Seevali Arukgoda, head of the Revenue Administration Reform and Modernization Bureau and Senior Additional Secretary to the President, commended the Customs IT Division for delivering the system.
