MIDDLE EAST TENSIONS REACH SRI LANKAN WATERS
U.S. forces struck three Iranian crude oil carriers on Saturday, after U.S. Central Command said the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired ballistic missiles at two Navy warships in the region. The escalation has a direct local dimension: several Iranian vessels have been anchored close to Sri Lanka's territorial waters. Deputy Defence Minister Aruna Jayasekera told the Daily Mirror that Colombo has received no formal request or communication from Iran regarding the ships, and that the government has no concerns over their presence at this stage.
POLITICS AND ACCOUNTABILITY
Following the arrests of MP Namal Rajapaksa and former Minister Johnston Fernando by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, Deputy Minister of Public Security Sunil Watagala said the government's position is that accountability for past wrongdoing applies equally to everyone, regardless of political affiliation.
