POLITICS
Opposition MP Dayasiri Jayasekera has questioned President Anura Kumara Dissanayake's plan to hold a series of rallies from September 5, suggesting the campaign may be laying the ground for a referendum on the 22nd Amendment. The government has not confirmed any such move.
Separately, SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa said the deadline for Sri Lanka's Digital ID rollout has now passed without delivery, and demanded the government state clearly when the system will actually be in place.
ECONOMY AND LABOUR
Public sector unrest is building over pay. The State and Provincial Development Officers Union will stage a protest tomorrow, Monday August 31, following IMF and International Labour Organisation reports ranking Sri Lanka 120th out of 130 countries for poor salaries.
The Sevanagala Sugar Factory has been temporarily shut down with production still halted, the company chairman said, after repeated disruptions tied to employee unrest and trade union action. The two developments point to widening industrial tension across state-linked workplaces.
CRIME AND SECURITY
Police opened fire at a Narahenpita checkpoint to foil an alleged abduction of a young woman who had been attending a graduation ceremony at the BMICH in Colombo. Officers fired at the vehicle after the driver repeatedly refused orders to stop. The woman was rescued.
In Anuradhapura, a man allegedly lured his wife to a forest reserve in the Korakahawwa area on Friday following a family dispute and killed her with a sharp weapon, police said. He then stabbed himself with the same knife and was injured.
In Kandy, a protester who displayed a banner outside the Sri Dalada Maligawa carrying insulting remarks about the Diyawadana Nilame and the Senior DIG for the Central Province was doused with foul-smelling paint, police said.
