ECONOMY AND PARLIAMENT
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya told Parliament that fuel import costs rose sharply in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period last year, driven by the Middle East conflict, and that this has pushed up the cost of living. Parliament also approved a Rs. 7.5 billion supplementary estimate to fund government purchases of paddy from the 2026 Yala season.
Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Anura Karunathilake met World Bank Group representatives to discuss positioning Colombo Port as a regional logistics hub, arguing that current Middle East geopolitical tensions create an opening for Sri Lanka's maritime sector. On the trade front, Sri Lanka shipped its first consignment of fresh pineapples to Pakistan, opening a new export market for local agriculture.
GOVERNANCE
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake instructed the Security Forces to accelerate the release and return of lands in the Northern and Eastern Provinces that were taken over during the conflict.
Environment Deputy Minister Anton Jayakody told Parliament a gazette notification will be issued shortly formalising arrangements for supplying tame elephants to Peraheras. Separately, a Deputy Minister said ageing engines and carriages are behind recurring railway breakdowns, with procurement under way for five new train sets next year.
Parliament observed a minute's silence for veteran musician Visharada Dr. Nanda Malini.
CRIME AND INVESTIGATIONS
Police have appealed for public help in tracing three Chinese nationals wanted over an alleged abduction and murder at Colombo Port City. Police are also seeking a suspect who allegedly posed as a banker, placed large food orders at hotels and commercial establishments, and carried out thefts.
MP Namal Rajapaksa left the Financial Crimes Investigation Division after recording a statement lasting nearly six hours. The wife of former State Intelligence Service Director Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Suresh Sallay has appealed to the President not to extend her husband's detention order, citing a serious cardiac condition she described as life-threatening.
ROAD SAFETY
Five people were killed and three seriously injured when a tipper truck and a tractor collided in Moneragala at 12.10 a.m. on Friday. DIG W.P.J. Senadheera of the Traffic Control and Road Safety Division said 1,654 fatal road accidents have been recorded nationally so far this year.
WEATHER AND PUBLIC HEALTH
The Meteorological Department warned the heat index will reach 'Caution' level during daytime in parts of the Eastern Province and several other districts. In Jaffna, hundreds of people reported vision problems after excessively bright electric lighting was used to decorate a temple for a festival.
SRI LANKA ABROAD
A Pew Research Center study found Sri Lanka is the most positively viewed country in South Asia. Two of the three Sri Lankans who helped rescue two Air Force pilots from the Yellow Sea four years ago were granted long-term residency visas by South Korea's Justice Ministry on Friday.
